Kennel Champalays Breeding Program
Our breeding program aims to produce healthy, breed-typical, and robust Bernese Mountain Dogs that fully meet the official breed standard. We place great emphasis on preserving the original qualities of the breed – in temperament, appearance, and function.
The Breed’s Purpose
The Bernese Mountain Dog was originally developed in Switzerland as a versatile working farm dog, used for drafting, guarding property, and assisting with general farm work. This heritage is reflected in the breed’s strength, reliability, and willingness to work. Today, the breed is primarily a companion dog, but its original purpose still calls for a strong, stable, and well-balanced dog.
Breed Type and Standard
We work deliberately to breed dogs that clearly reflect the defining characteristics of the breed. This includes the distinctive size, balanced structure, and the strong yet harmonious build that is typical of the Bernese Mountain Dog.
Temperament
A stable and well-balanced temperament is a cornerstone of our breeding program. We focus on dogs that are gentle, calm, friendly, and sociable. The Bernese Mountain Dog should be trustworthy with people, especially children, and integrate well into family life, while maintaining a natural alertness without being aggressive. A sound temperament is just as important as physical health.
Health and Well-being
Health is a top priority in our breeding program. We only use breeding dogs that are health-tested and, as far as possible, free from hereditary diseases. We continuously work to improve the overall health of the breed through responsible and well-considered breeding practices.
Lifespan
We strive to improve the breed’s lifespan by prioritizing healthy pairings and avoiding known health issues. By selecting genetically strong and healthy dogs, we aim to enhance both longevity and quality of life.
Size and Robustness
The Bernese Mountain Dog is a large and powerful breed, and we focus on preserving its robust build without compromising health or mobility. Our goal is to produce strong, well-constructed dogs with correct structure and good functionality.
Responsible Breeding
We breed with care and respect for the breed. This means carefully selecting breeding dogs based on health, temperament, and breed type, in order to contribute positively to the future of the Bernese Mountain Dog.
